Capilano Squadron

Spring Student Cruise - April 01, 2007.

The Capilano Squadron arranges a Student Cruise for each boating class as a way to get new boaters and students on the water with experienced captains and proctors for some practical experience and know-how. Not only is this an excellent opportunity to do some hands-on cruising but also to socialize with fellow students and Squadron members.

The cruise departs from the relevant marinas (usually Sewells and Thunderbird in West Vancouver) at around 9:00 am. Each vessel will have 3-4 students, the captain and a proctor to assist where necessary. As well as basic navigation and boat handling you will also experience - pre-cruise briefing, departing the dock, anchoring, man overboard and docking.  If you have a particular aspect of boating that you want to know about, please raise this with the Proctor and he may be able to assist.

1. What to bring:

-          A PFD. If you do not have one your boat will probably be able to provide one.

-          Navigational equipment (plotters, protractors and charts) . The training charts are not accurate but will do for an exercise if you choose to do one. The boat will have the proper chart for the area we are cruising (Howe Sound). You will be asked to get a fix (or two) while cruising and report your position, which can be checked against the GPS position.

-          The weather may be wet and cold, please dress accordingly.

-          Please wear white soled, non-marking shoes. If you arrive at a vessel with black marking shoes your captain may ask you to remove them.

-          Perhaps something to drink or snack during the cruise.

As well as basic navigation and boat handling you will also experience - pre-cruise briefing, departing the dock, anchoring, man overboard and docking.  If you have a particular aspect of boating that you want to know about, please raise this with the Captain or Proctor and they may be able to assist. Lunch is also an excellent time to discuss/debate the usual boating topics which almost always give off heated debate. Try "Which anchor do you prefer?" to get the debate going.

4. The weather

The weather for Sunday has gone from bad to great to OK-ish in the past week and as I am writing this there is a 30-60% chance of rain. This can, of course change in no time and I am still foolishly believing that we will great weather.  Sunrise/Sunset – 6:48 am / 7:39 pm. Low tide – 11:48 am, 7.8ft and High tide – 5:24 pm, 12.6 ft so there will be very little current in the Sound during our cruise..
