Capilano Squadron

Desolation Sound - August 12 to 18, 2006.

Updated 8/1 - Note: Cruise Cancellation. Most of the Squadron's regular cruisers have already left for Desolation and because of delays in announcing the dates and cruise plan for this cruise, I have have had very little feedback from Squadron Members who would have liked to join the cruise. Kuredu is leaving for Desolation on August 3 and will be in Desolation till August 17 and we will probably be in the areas indicated in the float-plan below. If you would like to join up and cruise with us you are very welcome. Hail us on ch 16 or call my cell 604-833-0770.

The weather.

Early August is one of the best times to cruise to Desolation Sound and if statistics holds true we can expect some great weather. I will post updates as we get closer but you can start checking the forecast here.

The Cruise.

Our cruise will officially begin in Grace Harbour in Malaspina Inlet on Saturday August 12.  The following will be on our float plan (with currently planned dates).

bullet

Grace Harbour - Sat 8/12 (how about dinner at the Laughing Oyster?)

bullet

Prideaux Haven - Sun/Mon 8/12-13

bullet

Pendrell Sound - Tue/Wed 8/13-14 (warmest water North of Mexico, so we ought to honour this with a Mexican Evening event!)

bullet

Squirrel Cove or Cortes Bay - Thurs 8/15

Our cruising in Desolation will be limited to shorter cruises and we plan to keep it relaxed.  We are not planning to overnight at any marinas or docks but we will pass very close to Refuge Cove for supplies and refueling. Remember that all anchorages we will visit has a pump-out restriction so you need to work carefully with your supplies and waste.

Tides for the cruise up will be favourable for sailing and slower vessels on Friday and Saturday with lows around 8:30am and highs at 4:30pm with 11 ft tide change - a good push up the Strait. The tide curve after the high is also flat.

Kuredu will be up in Desolation a week before and will wait for Squadron Boats in Grace Harbour on the 12th. If you are interested in our float plan the week before and would like to meet up, please let me know. At this point we are cruising clockwise around Quadra, starting at Rebecca Spit on the 5th (Rob Savage's birthday there!) and April Point Resort on the 6-7th, then Octopus Islands, through Hole-in-the-Wall to von Dunlop and around the south end of Cortez to Grace Harbour.

Also, please feel free to join or leave the cruise as you wish to fit your own schedule, but let me know of your intentions as the cruise may change course without letting you know.
