Thetis Island & Chemainus

March 12 - 13, 2005.

This was, to some extent, our shakedown cruise for the Spring with the whole family. We were going to spend the evening at Montague Harbour with Rob and Heather and we left early Saturday morning. Cruising through English Bay we could see that the water in the Strait was pretty rough and we contacted Baby Knot on the VHF to see where they were. Rob reported that they could not get out of the Fraser River because of the water conditions. They tried for several hours and when we reached mid-Strait we radioed them and told them not to bother - there were 5-6 footers in the Strait and they would have a heck of a time to try and cross.

So, instead of going all the way down to Montague Harbour, we went through Active Passage (uneventful, this time) and headed for Thetis Island Marina, where we stayed the night.

Marina sign.  Relaxing after the trip across.  Towards Telegraph Harbour Marina at the head of the inlet.  The pub and restaurant.  Head of the inlet - Thestis Island.  Mmmm...?  Still a little chilly.  But the sun.  Fuel dock.  Ferry to Kuper Island - an Indian Reserve  Sunset.  Social around the Heater Buddy.

The next morning, after breakfast of cheese omelettes, we left for Chemainus to go see some of the murals. What a pretty little town! Well worth a walk-through. Here are some of the murals and the town.

And then it was time to head home.

Chemainus public docks - free for a few hours.  Heading out of Chemainus - Chris on the bow.  Looking up towards Dodd Narrows.  Philip cruising.  Binocs in hand.  Mt Baker in Washington State.  100_3399Almost home - Passage Island.  Cruising past Vancouver to Eagle Harbour
